Beaufort Seniors v An Gheaeltacht in Round 2 Division 2 County League

Our Senior men sponsored by Maurice Foley of MF Decorating in Round 2 of the County League (Division 2) were away to An Ghaeltacht on Sunday.  Initial conditions were less than perfect with a strong southerly wind and a mix of rain and hail.  Captain Nathan Breen was first on the ball winning the throw in but play was suspended after two and a half minutes due to extremely heavy hail.  This cleared swiftly and once the players returned to the field there was a good run for the away side but the first chance of a point was easily saved by Tomás Mac an tSaoir.  Play was slow due to the conditions and after eight minutes Dara Ó Sé of an Gaeltacht scored the first point of the game.  Danny Healy of Beaufort won the kick out but he was heavily marked by Peter Paul Sauerland and Séan Ó Bambaire and ultimately lost the ball to Seán Micheál Ó Conchúir.  The ball was swiftly passed to PJ Mac Láimh and after a beautiful block from Gerard Hartnett of Beaufort it fell into the hands Eoin Mac Gearailt who was later fouled by the Beaufort men.  The free that followed resulted in the second point for both an Ghaeltacht and Dara Ó Sé and moments later the an Ghaeltacht man scored a hat trick from another free.  There was great passing for both sides but due to slippy conditions it was difficult to make headway.  An Ghaeltacht’s fourth point came in the fifteenth minute off the boot of PJ Mac Láimh.  There were two frees awarded to Beaufort in the seventeenth minute taken by Feral Hallissey and Francis Courtney respectively but both unfortunately fell wide of the mark and an Ghaeltacht answered in the nineteenth minute with a point for Pádraig Óigí Ó Sé.  Great passing between James Coffey, Gerard Hartnett, Pádraig O’Sullivan, Nathan Breen and Ronan Murphy lead to James Coffey scoring the opening point for Beaufort and just two minutes later Danny Healy set Feral Hallissey up to nicely score Beaufort’s second point of the day.  Pádraig Hallissey came on for Francis Courtney in the twenty sixth minute and following three misses for Beaufort referee Paul Hayes blew the whistle for half time.  Half time scores were an Ghaeltacht 0-5 Beaufort 0-2.

Weather conditions in the second half were much improved from the first and the throw in was won by Pádraig Ó Sé of the home side.  An Ghaeltacht settled into the second half with ease scoring points within the first few minutes coming from both Séamus Ó Muircheartaigh and Ciarán Ó Céilleachair and then a goal for PJ Mac Láimh.  There was brilliant mid field work for the Beaufort men but a missed opportunity for James Coffey saw the ball heading right up the opposite end of the field resulting in a point for Pádraig Óigí Ó Sé of an Ghaeltacht.  After a missed free to Beaufort in the thirty eight minute Jeremiah O’Sullivan, Jason Foley and Michael O’Sullivan were introduced to the team. Tomás Mac an tSaoir came up the field to take a 45 for an Ghaeltacht but was unsuccessful however the ball was right on the mark in the forty fourth minute  when Seán Ó Bambaire passed the ball to PJ Mac Láimh and it was safely buried in the back of the Beaufort net.  There was a quick substitution for Beaufort with Danny Healy coming off to make way for Niall O’Connor.  The hard work for Beaufort that followed was finally rewarded  with a point for James Coffey and this was followed by two points, one from a free for Fergal Hallissey and the other from play James Coffey once again.  Daragh Coffey of Beaufort displayed some great footwork but was taken down by the home side resulting in a free to be taken by Feral Hallissey who unfortunately slipped just as he made contact with the ball.  There was heavy play in front of the an Ghaeltacht goal which resulted in a free for Beaufort that was well executed by Daragh Coffey.  In the dying minutes of the game Beaufort had a chance on goal but this was well saved by Tomás Mac an tSaoir and was followed by a missed free Feral Hallissey.  Shane Ó Grifín of an Ghaeltacht closed the game with the final point for the home side leaving the full time score An Ghaeltacht 2-9 Beaufort 0-6.  Team:  Mike Moriarty, Michael John O’Connor, Gerard Hartnett, Brendan Cronin, James Reilly, Nathan Breen capt, Padraig Hartnett, Fergal Hallissey, James Coffey, Sean Kelliher, Francis Courtney, Padraig O’Sullivan, Danny Healy, Ronan Murphy, Daragh Coffey.
