The 2017 season got off to a great start today with the Under 21 team taking on Laune Rangers on home turf in the Mid Kerry U21 Championship. Laune Rangers won the breaking ball in the first half but Beaufort were quick on the attack, however scoring attempts by both teams were in vain for the first few minutes of the game. The opening score did go to the home side in the end which saw a free given to Ciaran Kennedy pass to Danny Healy, Mike Breen and Darragh Coffey with Coffey ultimately putting the ball over the bar in the sixth minute. Moments later a yellow card was handed down to Beaufort’s Brendan Cronin and the resulting free lead to a point for Laune Ragers which was taken by Fiachra Clifford. Momentum carried the Beaufort men over the next few minutes with Aaron Foley scoring two points, one from a free and one from play and a super goal for Darragh Coffey. A side line ball taken by a very on form Danny Healy was passed to Ciaran Kennedy and this too found its way over the bar. Laune Rangers started to make a come back after this with Patrick Daly scoring a point from a free, David Costello fielding the ball well and scoring the away teams first goal and John Tyther getting a point from play. Towards the end of the first half Beaufort once again were on top and Liam Carey was the man of the moment scoring a point and then skillfully catching the kick out that followed and fielding the ball to Captain Naill O’Connor who scored Beaufort’s second goal of the game. Both teams struggled to control the ball in the centre of the field and after it was eventually kicked out over the line the second yellow card of the day was shown, this time to Laune Rangers, Patrick Daly. In the closing minutes of the first half Beaufort’s Danny Healy, Ciaran Kennedy, Liam Carey and Aaron Foley were the dominant forces on the field resulting in Beaufort’s third goal this time from Aaron Foley, who followed up with a point seconds later. Half Time Score Beaufort 3-06 Laune Rangers 1-03.
Breaking ball was won by Beaufort in the second half however much like the first half both teams were just wide of the target until four minutes in when Beaufort won the Laune Rangers kick out three times in a row and the play that followed saw both Liam Carey and Niall O’Connor put a point each on the board. A penalty was awarded to Beaufort when Cormac O’Connor was brought down just inside the square, this was taken by Liam Carey who scored Beaufort’s fourth goal of the afternoon. Beaufort continued their success over the next few minutes with Mike Breen and Danny Healy each scoring points but this was answered by Laune Rangers Patrick Carey scoring a great point from play and Patrick Daly also scoring a point from a free. Beaufort scored two more points towards the end of the second half but these were answered by Laune Rangers who scored two points also and Laune Rangers David Costello scored a mighty goal in the 27th minute. Very shortly after Laune Rangers looked certain to score their third goal but a great save by Beaufort goal keeper Cian Sullivan kept them at two goals and seven points. The very last score of the day went to the home side with Sean Kelliher fielding the ball to Ciaran Kennedy and Kennedy putting it over the bar and scoring his third point of the day. Final Score Beaufort 4-13 Laune Rangers 2-07.
